Queen Drops 24 as Blue Devils Beat Rival Armada

1/09/2009

RICHMOND, Mich. -- When asked about Josh Queen's shooting abilities recently, Richmond forward Jesse DePauw put it plain and simple.

"He shoots the ball well," said DePauw.

This seemed to be a vast understatement as Queen hit on 6 of 9 three-pointers and scored 24 total points as the Richmond Blue Devils defeated the Armada Tigers 53-50 to extend their winning streak to seven games.

"We'd have let him [Queen] shoot thirty if he could have," said head coach Jim Barnes after the game.

"He was due for a breakout game and he was huge for us."

Richmond stormed out to an 18-7 in the first quarter, but gave most of it back in a lopsided 17-8 second.

"We changed defenses, and we just weren't ready for it. We gave it up about as fast as we got it," said Barnes.

From then on, the game stayed close until the final minutes as Richmond hit clutch free-throws down the stretch to take and maintain the lead.

The emotion and speed of the game was not lost on anybody, especially DePauw, who notched his second double-double of the season by knocking down 16 points and 12 boards.

"It was intense," said Depauw after the game.

"It was really close the whole game and we had a lot of fun."

The Blue Devils have now won four of their last six meetings with rival Armada. They will head to Capac and put their seven-game winning streak on the line on January 13 before returning to Richmond for a game with Algonac on January 16.
