Season Ends With Last-Second Shot

3/15/2009

Richmond's season came to a dramatic close in the district semifinals, as St. Clair senior AJ Magee sank an 18-foot jumper as time expired to give the visiting Saints a buzzer-beating victory over the host Blue Devils, 34-32. The loss concludes Richmond's season with an overall record of 16-6.

The game was a defensive battle from the onset, and neither team was able to muster more than 10 points in any quarter. Richmond held St. Clair to 28% shooting in the contest, but shot only 21% themselves.

The seesaw battle came to an unforgettable climax in the final moments. Richmond gamed their first lead with under three minutes left, and after a defensive stop, Richmond called timeout with 1:39 left to play leading 32-30. However, Richmond was called for a five-second violation on the ensuing possession and fouled Magee on St. Clair's next trip. Magee's two free throws tied the game at 32-all, and Richmond worked the ball for a lay-up on their next possession. The Blue Devils could not capitalize and missed their final shot at the basket, setting up the final score by Magee.

St. Clair (11-10) moves on to the district Championship game against Marysville Friday at Richmond.
